What are the benefits of dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers help to make the skin look more youthful and revitalised by temporarily filling out lines and wrinkles in certain areas, most commonly the face. Dermal fillers are made of a substance which is naturally present in the body called hyaluronic acid. The fillers have temporary results that can last for up to several months, but this means you don’t have to commit to making a permanent change to your face. For many people, dermal fillers are a perfect introduction to a dermatological aesthetics treatment program.

Results can often be seen very soon after treatment and the majority of clients have no downtime post treatment.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid (also referred to as ‘HA’) is a natural component that helps your skin to retain water, create volume and enhance elasticity. The skin consists of three main layers, the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous layer which is the deepest layer of the skin. Hyaluronic acid can be found in all three of these layers.

However, as you age, your skins’ ability to produce hyaluronic acid lessens, meaning the skin will renew itself far less than it did in younger years. In combination with external elements such as sun exposure, gravity, repetitive movements, diet and stress the skin loses volume sags and develops fine and occasionally deeper set wrinkles.

How should I prepare for dermal fillers?

A full consultation process is to be done prior to any treatment. Once this has been completed and we’ve discussed your expectations, we’ll ensure you understand the procedure’s timelines and expected results.

We recommend you:

  • Eat and drink prior to attending your appointment

  • Do not consume alcohol 48 hours prior to the treatment

  • Talk to us about any medication you are taking (we’ll discuss this with you at the consultation stage)

  • Avoid sunbeds before and after treatment

  • Avoid wearing make-up on the day of the treatment

What will happen during the treatment?

We will clean and sterilise the area; you can expect some mild discomfort during the treatment, but the injection site will be numbed using a topical or local anaesthetic for your comfort.

What can I expect after my treatment?

You may feel some mild discomfort at the injection site. To avoid excessive bruising and swelling and to ensure the best possible results we recommend following the complete aftercare advice that we will provide. Most commonly we ask clients to avoid strenuous exercise and extreme temperatures after the treatment. You should also avoid touching the area or the injection site as much as possible.

One of the benefits of dermal fillers is that you will begin to see results almost immediately after treatment. That being said, you can expect some swelling and mild bruising in the days following, so always be sure to book your treatment well in advance of any important event you may need to attend.

How long will the results last?

Results for each treatment will vary between individuals, and their lifestyles. However, you can expect the results to last on average anywhere between four and twelve months.

Could there be any side effects or complications?

As with any cosmetic procedure there is always a risk of side effects. The most common side effects include tenderness, pain, redness, swelling, firmness, lumps/bumps at the site, discolouration and itching.

Although most side effects will resolve with time, some side effects may persist and last longer. If this happens we can treat them with a product called hyaluronidase, which is an enzyme used to break down the hyaluronic acid and essentially removes the product.

Severe complications from dermal fillers are very uncommon. Risks depend on the type of filler used and the individual patient. Potential side effects specific to dermal fillers include:

  • Asymmetry

  • Bruising or bleeding from injection site

  • Swelling

  • Lumps

  • Palpability of filler under skin

  • Skin redness or a rash

  • Under or over correction of wrinkles

  • Infection

  • Blindness

  • Skin necrosis

At Face Co Aesthetics we recommend sourcing a clinician who is professionally and medically trained and able to answer all of your questions related to the procedure and the risks.
